Morris Eagle’s (2007) view is that – and I don’t actually fully agree with him – we have two separate dynamics, the sexual behavioural system and the attachment behavioural system, and that a long-term partnership, such as a marital relationship, is always a bit of a compromise between those two. One interesting point is statistics show that, when couples start dating, on average they have sex after around seven meetings, whereas it takes two years for a fully attachment relationship to develop – so there are separate dynamics, with differing time-scales, and it takes a while for them to converge – for their horizons to fuse, as it were!
