Design Context The study was conducted in the English Language Department of a university in Auckland, New Zealand. Students who were new to the university were assigned to a proficiency level after taking a standardized grammar test, a writing test, and a one-on-one interview while students who had previously been studying at a lower proficiency level were placed in the low-intermediate level on the basis of earlier competency-based assessments. The English Language Department describes its approach to the teaching of English as communicative and gives an equal focus to reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
