She, too, was born in Poland; she studied in Zurich and moved in 1924 to France, where she was analysed by Sokolnicka and continued to work for fifteen years in the child neuropsychiatry department at the Salpêtrière until her death in 1940 (Geissmann & Geissmann, 1998, p. 148f). Between 1925 and 1940, she published fifteen articles and a book on child psychoanalysis. However, it is not clear from the enumeration of her published work given by the Geissmanns to what extent she herself worked as a child analyst.

This five-session setting was then carried over into child analysis. When I underwent my training as a child analyst with Anna Freud at London’s Hampstead Clinic— now the Anna Freud Centre—in the early 1960s, it was taken for granted that both training cases and one’s own training analysis would comprise five sessions per week. The same applied, and still applies, to training as an adult analyst in the British Psychoanalytical Society. The usual reductions to four sessions a week in Germany or three in France are departures from the original situation that have arisen in the last few decades.

The DPV offers interested members training as child analysts in courses intended to last at least three years, with thirty clinical case seminars and thirty theoretical seminars per year. At least three cases in different age groups (under-fives, latency, and adolescence) of both sexes must be treated under supervision during this period; one of these cases must have four sessions per week and the other two at least three. The training concludes with the presentation of a clinical paper at a DPV institute in the presence of at least two child analysts.
